I have 8.5 years of experience as a software engineer with a master's degree in computer science. I had a quick 15-minute HR phone call with Square, followed by a 45-minute phone call with the hiring manager. I was rejected after the phone screen. I believe the rejection was due to my responses to behavioral questions, as the technical questions were relatively easy. The technical questions covered SOLID principles, dependency injection, TDD, pair programming, and how to find and solve performance issues in SQL databases and web API code. The behavioral questions included: How did you resolve a recent design conflict? How do you handle impossible deadlines from product managers or the business?
