I interviewed for a Frontend Engineer position at TikTok in Seattle in June . I have a life sciences degree and 2.5 years of experience in frontend development.
The initial phone screen was a 15-minute conversation about the role, the team, and my background. We discussed my resume, visa sponsorship, and the technical interview process. I was given the option to choose between two algorithm questions or one algorithm question and one frontend question.
After the phone screen, the recruiter emailed me to inform me that the immigration team would not be able to approve my visa sponsorship because my life sciences degree is not related to the software engineer role.
I was disappointed by the outcome, as I had hoped that landing a job at a large tech company would validate my skills as a developer. However, I am grateful that TikTok reached out to me in the first place.
I recently accepted a job at another company and am excited about this opportunity. My advice to other candidates is to not let setbacks discourage you. Hard work will always be rewarded.
